Encrypted QR: Content Only the Right Person Can See

Not every page behind a QR is meant for the whole world. An encrypted QR keeps its content behind a lock screen: the guest scans, enters a password, and only after the server verifies it does the page appear. We explain how it works and where a hotel puts it to use.

Some of what a hotel wants to share is not meant for everyone who walks past a poster. A room-block code for a wedding party, a members-only offer, the programme for a private event, an internal reference for the team behind the scenes — print any of these as an ordinary QR and anyone who points a phone at it can read along. The encrypted QR, a password-protected code, solves this cleanly: the guest scans, is met by a lock screen, enters a password, and only once the server has checked it does the content appear. What an encrypted QR actually is

An encrypted QR looks and prints like any other code, but what sits behind it is gated. When a guest scans it, they do not land straight on the content; they reach a simple lock screen that asks for a password. They type it in, the server verifies it, and only a correct password opens the page. Get it wrong and there is nothing to see. You set the password when you create the code and share it only with the people who are meant to have it: the wedding guests, the members, the team.

Hidden on the server, not just in the browser

This is the part that matters, and it is where a real encrypted QR differs from a page that is simply tucked away. The protected content is held on the server and is not sent to the phone until the password checks out. It is not merely styled to look invisible while the text quietly sits in the page for anyone curious enough to look — until the lock is opened, the content is not there to find. That distinction is the whole point: a password you can peek around is not protection, and an encrypted QR is built so there is nothing to peek at.

Once unlocked, a normal guest page

The lock is the only difference the guest feels. Once the password is accepted, the page behaves exactly like any other guest page in your hotel: files to open, links to follow, information to read, all in your branding and in the guest's own language. There is no separate app to install and no clumsy second step; the guest simply moves from the lock screen to the content and uses it as they would any other page. The gate protects the content without getting in the way of it.

Where a hotel puts it to use

Once you can hand out a code and still decide who gets in, a lot of everyday cases open up:

  • VIP and members-only pages: an offer, a loyalty benefit or a lounge guide meant only for a particular group, shared with a password rather than left in the open.
  • Private events: the programme, seating or house information for a wedding, a gala or a corporate meeting, visible to the guests of that event and no one else.
  • Wedding and group blocks: arrival details, timings and the day's plan for a wedding party, printed on the invitation or a welcome card and locked to that group.
  • Back-of-house references: a document or link the team needs to reach on the floor but that has no reason to be public.

In each case you print one code and keep control of who actually reads what is behind it.

Because the protection lives behind the code rather than in the pattern, an encrypted QR keeps every advantage of a dynamic QR. You print it once, on a card, an invitation or a sign, and manage both the password and the content from the panel afterwards.
